All You Need to Know about Sharjah's Blue Souk
Compared to the famous neighboring Emirates of Dubai & Abu Dhabi, Sharjah is perhaps lesser known in the travelling world. But it is popular on its own for being a historic city filled with archaeological sites, cultural landmarks, and museums that highlight the local Arab tradition and culture throughout the years. If you plan a trip, ditch the malls and visit something local: the iconic Blue Souk.
The Blue Souk is also known locally as Souk al-Markazi or the Central Market, and it is Sharjah's most iconic tourist landmark. In fact, this spot is so famous because it is also printed on the local five Dhiram note! Designed by British architects Michael Lyle & Partners and based on the vision of the then ruler of Sharjah, HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, this structure exudes the old world charm with a modern touch.
This structure was completed and opened to the public in 1978, making it the perfect bazaar setting for small business owners. The entire Blue Souk is essentially two building structures interconnected with bridges. And because of the blue tiles adorning the external walls, it is also known as Blue Souk.
This shopping plaza rivals any of the newer shopping malls. With a whopping 80,000 sq.m of area, the Blue Souk has around 600 shops where you can easily spend the day and wallet! From handmade souvenir shops dealing with local textile goods, there are spices, food shops, and even boutique clothing brands and high-end jewellery stores. This shopping mall is essentially a one-stop-shop for all things fashion, skincare, beauty and more! Get your fill of the arts & crafts items, perfumes, home decor and cosmetics you might not find anywhere else. And the best part about wandering through the different shops is that you can negotiate the price with the local vendors.
Perfect for bargain hunters looking to get a deal!
